Things To Remember When Traveling Abroad For Studies

edwise-logo

Planning to study abroad? That doesn’t mean you can’t kill it with an incredible backpacking trip. You need to play it smart, though; finding ways to cut corners and watching your wallet very carefully to maximize this adventure. The best part about backpacking is that you make the rules, but you need to hit a few checkpoints first. There are always a few important items that could slip your mind when packing for abroad. While you were choosing your trendiest outfits to fit in with the locals, you probably forgot to pack a universal adaptor to use when you travel on the weekends; forgetting that not every country in Europe takes the same type of plug. Here’s a list of smart things to get for study abroad that you’ll be happy you picked up before you hopped on your flight.

Study Abroad - Things to remember

Here are few tips which will make your studying abroad easy:-

  • Paper Work in Place

Get your passport as early as possible, and apply for your visa(s) on time if you’re wondering “Visa? What visa?” please open a new tab and look up your chosen country and whether do you have a passport, double and triple check the expiration date. Make sure it will last you well beyond your semester abroad.

  • Health Check-Up

Your doctor might recommend you visit a travel clinic, where you’ll find out exactly what you’ll need to stay healthy. Contact your health insurance company to let them know where and when you’ll be traveling and request your prescriptions in advance.

  • Bank Visits

Meet with your bank to find out how your credit and debit cards work overseas. Some banks will have their own, hassle-free ATMs in your area, and some might have regional partners that don’t charge a fee for withdrawing cash. If you belong to a smaller bank that doesn’t have an international presence, plan for that. Lean on a traveler’s credit card as much as possible, and only take out cash when absolutely necessary.

  • Appropriate Clothing

Do some research about the country you’re headed to. Check the weather, the dress code (if any) at your in-country school, and definitely find out what kind of clothing is culturally appropriate. It’s always a good idea to keep a multipurpose scarf on hand to cover your shoulders in case you want to wander into a cathedral in Italy, or a Buddhist temple in Sri Lanka.

  • Currency Exchange

When deciding where to study abroad, many students consider daily expenses, but some of the cheapest countries to visit are also the least stable. Don’t assume that the US dollar will have the same value when you’re studying abroad as it did when you checked the exchange rate five months ago, especially if your country has a particularly volatile economy. Even small changes can make a big impact when you’re budgeting for months instead of days, and you could suddenly find yourself spending Western Europe money in what you thought was a friendly destination.

edwise-logo

How exciting it is to study and live abroad. You’re signing up for one of the most interesting adventures of your life. That’s for sure. But in order to fully enjoy your experience; you ‘ll do well by heeding a few tips. Some are essential but others are strongly recommended suggestions. And the sooner you start to plan, the better. Making sure items on your study abroad to-do list don ‘t pile up ensures a smooth transition from here to there. Studying abroad is an amazing experience, but getting ready for the big trip can be hectic and overwhelming. Don ‘t panic if you don ‘t know what you need to do before studying abroad.

Study Abroad, Study Overseas

Tips:-

You must have a valid passport to travel and study abroad. If you already have one, be sure to double check that it’s not expired. Also, make sure that you have blank pages in your passport if you’ve travelled abroad before. For passport newbies can directly apply for a new passport at selected post offices, federal or state courts of records, or at a State Department passport agency. It can take anywhere from 6 to 12 months to get a passport, so make sure you start on this one well in advance.

If you are planning to go abroad, it is very useful to get a local number. Most phones are locked by default by the carrier. It is strongly recommend to ask your carrier company from your country to unlock your phone. They are obligated to do it without charge, but be aware that it would take more or less one week, so plan it in advance.

Often, if applying for an undergraduate degree at an accredited university, the school will assist with the student visa process. This is not always the case however, so make sure to ask. If no help is offered, get straight onto the job of securing your student visa yourself. To do this you will need to contact the embassy or consulate of your country of study and may need to attend an appointment as part of your student visa application. Here you’ll be asked to bring documentation such as a university letter of approval, the aforementioned valid passport, proof of funds, and, occasionally, a return ticket for your journey home at the end your studies.

Make sure you’ve included the contact information for people like your mentors and teachers at your host university, the emergency services number in your host country and it probably wouldn’t hurt to keep the contact details of your classmates and friends abroad. Create a list of emergency contacts and keep this list handy at all times (keep a copy of this list with your important documents too). Also include the number for your bank to report lost and stolen credit cards. And pre-organize how you will stay in touch with home while abroad: ie will you use a local cell phone, Skype, email etc.

Carrying the local currency is a must, but make sure you don’t rely solely on cash or withdraw large amounts of cash at a time. When converting your money make sure to do it before getting to the airport, where exchange rates are not the best. This can often be done through your local bank, travel agents, post office, some supermarkets or even a specialist online provider. To get the best rates, price comparison websites such as super market can help. As well as cash, you should also have a bank account which you can access abroad with a cash card or credit card, through local ATMs or an international bank branch. Most major banks are internationally recognized, but you will often be charged a small fee every time you withdraw money or pay with your card. Make sure your card is valid for the duration of your trip.

Extra Help: College Admissions

edwise-logo

Being well-rounded can give you an edge when competing for at spot at universities around the country. As you prepare to apply for college, good grades and high test scores are important, but there are other ways to show admissions officers that you’re the right fit. In a world where there are scores of high school seniors applying to schools, many of which are becoming increasingly demanding, it’s important to give yourself an edge. When you consider that some students might have good GPA, it becomes even more vital to show that you are more than just a number.

Overseas College Admission Consultants, Edwise International

Here are few tips which will help you to get things easier for the admission process:-

Financial aid is more available and more abundant than a lot of families realize. Many of the country’s most elite and most expensive colleges are extremely generous with need-based financial aid, and there is scholarship money, both merit and need-based, waiting for students and families willing to seek it out and apply for it. Students might be surprised at what they can afford. At both state and private universities, legacy status which can mean different things depending on the institution, including students whose grandparents, parents, and/or siblings attended the school for either undergrad or graduate school or other alumni connections in no way guarantee admission, and students and their parents should set their expectations according to how qualified the student is for the school on their own, not how many family members attended there or how much money they give to the school each year. Schools have too many students with connections to the university to accept them all.

With early decision, colleges understand they are requiring a commitment and thus recognize early devotion to their school. Applicants should understand that the pool of applicants is smaller if and when they are able to apply early decision. Many college students are afraid to commit to one school and/or are afraid, or unprepared, to commit too early. If an applicant is sure of and committed to a university, taking the plunge and applying early decision can boost the odds of admission simply with the pool of students being lower. Colleges and universities care a great deal about their yield because it has an impact on their prestige, planning, and finances; students who apply early decision have committed to the institution and that helps institutions boost their yields.

Your letters of recommendation can give your college application an edge as well. Build relationships with the advisers and organization leaders that head up programs you’re involved with. These relationships will help them provide a comprehensive view of your strengths and abilities in their letters. Students should do the same with their teachers, so admissions officers can get an idea of how you behave inside and outside of class. Your letters of recommendation should focus on how you accomplish your schoolwork, excel in your extracurricular activities, and describe how you interact with other students etc.

Canada or Australia, Which One Should You Choose For Study Abroad?

edwise-logo

Courses whether Business Management, Media, Engineering, Nursing, Computer Science and Hospitality? In Australia or Canada? Both are large countries with beautiful landscape, with possibly the kindest, most welcoming people of anywhere in the world. So how do you choose between the two? When trying to decide what country to study in, of course you must do your research! Compare schools, compare cost of living, all those important things. But when deciding between two countries as similar as Australia and Canada, spend some time looking at the elements, like those above, that will give you a fun and unforgettable experience abroad. Choosing from the two most liveable countries of the world can be a challenge. Depending on the course you wish to study and the universities, these should be the major elements while choosing your study abroad country to live in.

Eligibility

  • Canada

For undergraduate courses, you need to have completed 12 years of schooling. To get admission, you need to appear for the SAT exam. The duration for degree courses is four years, and that of a diploma is two to three years. In postgraduate courses, getting admission in vocational courses is easier as the admission criteria are a lot more relaxed. To get admission for management degrees you will have to appear for GMAT, and for engineering degrees you need to give the GRE exam. The concept of cutoffs doesn’t apply to Canadian colleges. Colleges provide average scores accepted to different courses on their websites. That will give some idea about what’s considered a good score. You will also need to appear for language exams like TOEFL or IELTS, irrespective of the degree. There are some colleges that may not require language test for Indian students, but it is advisable you still give either TOEFL or IELTS as they are important for the purpose of getting a visa. If the visa interviewer is not sure of your spoken skills, they may not grant you the visa.

Study abroad in Australia

  • Australia

For UG courses in Australia, almost all universities require 12 years of pre-university education, which makes it easier for Indian students to get admission directly to the course/degree of their choice. In PG courses, you can get admissions after finishing a three-year UG degree. In the case of engineering, you will need a four-year UG degree in engineering. To get admission in management courses you will have to appear for GMAT and for science courses you may need to give the GRE. You might not be required to have work experience in case of management courses at some colleges. In the case of no work experience, you need to enrol in a graduate certificate or graduate diploma program. IELTS and TOEFL may be waivered by the university but are important for the purpose of getting a visa.

  • Safety

Safe and secure country: Going miles away from one’s family, friends, natives, city, state, and the country is a big decision and safety is the foremost factor that one considers. Canada is a multicultural country where people from various cultures, nationalities stay together. The country is politically stable. However, such is not the case with Australia as there are instances where racism prevails in Australia. So, the study in Canada is much safer. Being a multicultural society, Canadians are tolerant of each other and they encourage learning and living together and is a Tolerant society. The diversity on campus in Canadian institutes leads to a welcoming atmosphere for international students.

  • Living Expenses

For applying for an Australian student visa, students have to prove that they at least A$20,000 per annum to cover living costs. The visa category is same for all international students aspiring to study in Australia. Canadian living per month for a student has been estimated to be up to around $15,000 per annum. The living costs also depend upon the city and lifestyle. Typically bigger cities are more expensive than the smaller cities. There are a number of things to know before aspirants decide Canada as a study destination.

  • City Preferences

In countries like Canada and Australia the choice is not nearly as widespread as in the USA but cities like Toronto, Sydney, Melbourne, Montreal, or Vancouver are among the most liveable cities in the world according to Economist Intelligence Unit rankings. They are also important economic centres where much of the highly paid work is to be found. In a country like the USA, you have an overwhelming amount of choice from Seattle to Miami, from Boston to San Diego and everywhere in between. Remember however, that you are likely looking for a safe, stable environment where you can focus on studying and achieving your post graduate goals, be it employment or further education. or both.

6 Reasons Why Every International Student Needs a Credit Card

edwise-logoAugust 2018

No matter which country you choose for your higher education, finances are always the most essential element. With the passage of time, education loan has surely played a pivotal role in making overseas education affordable, but at the same time, we cannot deny the fact that the introduction of credit cards has made it easy to manage the petty expenses during overseas education, which might have been a hassle otherwise. Gone are the days when credit cards used to be a necessity for the employed or business class people only, these days credit cards have become a requisite for the students aspiring to pursue an overseas education. If you are also an aspirant looking forward to pursue your further education abroad, let’s see how a credit card is a must have thing for you.

  • Secure Transactions

Transactions made through a credit card are more secure as compared to those made through a debit card. In case of in-person theft or loss, where a debit card puts your cash assets at risk, a credit card is much safer and can be easily blocked. Adding to the advantage, you can easily disconnect with the credit card in case your information is compromised.

  • Building a Credit history

Credit history is an important part of your economic success, just like income and savings. Borrowing small and large amounts from the bank and then repaying it back on time helps you build up a credit score, which reflects your accountability and further helps you a lot in case you need some loan in the future. It depicts that you are capable and responsible enough to pay back the borrowed amount on time.

  • Unforeseen Situations

Expenses such as medical emergencies, auto repairs or plane tickets can be a big hassle in a student’s life. Thus, in order to overcome any such unforeseen situation, a credit card can be your helping hand and also offer you the time and flexibility of a billing cycle to get your finances in order without being at a loss for necessary cash.

  • Collateral Deposits

A few services such as car rentals, hotels, and cell phone companies etc often insist on submitting a credit card while signing up. This is called collateral, which is something of value that can be used as a security deposit. Using a credit card for such security deposits help you avoid losing access to cash.

  • Financial Independence

Sometimes, financial imbalance can create a hassle in your life. Situations, like waiting for your salary or waiting for a wire transfer to hit your account, may test your patience and leave you in a chaos of temporary financial crisis. In such situations, a credit card is a blessing that can help you curb with the problem by helping you manage your everyday expenses, which you can easily pay back once you receive your payments, thereby making you financially independent.

  • Unexpected Charges

A few items such as cell phone plans, bus passes, and electronic toll booth readers are subject to unexpected charges. To add to it, transportation passes often require you to maintain a balance that is automatically refreshed through your registered card in case of insufficient balance. Caught by such miscellaneous unexpected expenses, you can find yourself unexpectedly without cash, thus credit card can be extremely helpful to help you survive through such situations.
